Hiking Australia is an independent guide for people who want to walk in Australia's national parks and bushland safely and with a light footprint. We publish plain-language guides in three areas: planning, covering choosing a walk and track grades, what to pack, footwear and clothing, and hiking with children; safety, covering trip intentions, personal locator beacons, snakebite first aid, and heat and fire danger; and on the trail, covering coastal walks, waterfall safety, multi-day hikes and Leave No Trace. Our free pack list builds a checklist for your walk.
Why we exist
This web address was once home to a personal bushwalking blog, which later closed. We have no connection to its author. Official safety advice is spread across parks agencies, emergency services and health bodies in every state. We want to bring the essentials together in one place, in plain language, and point you to the official source for anything that matters.
How we work
We write every guide in our own words. For facts, we rely on parks agencies such as NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, healthdirect, the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation, fire agencies, the Bureau of Meteorology and Leave No Trace Australia, and we list our sources on each page. We never invent statistics, track times, prices, quotes or reviews, and we don't rank or recommend retailers, brands or tour operators.
Independence
Hiking Australia (hikingaustralia.com.au) is an independent information site. We are not a parks agency, emergency service, tour operator, outdoor retailer or walking club, and we are not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by any organisation named on this site, any previous operator of this domain, or any organisation with a similar name.
General information only
Our guides are general information and aren't a substitute for first aid training, local knowledge or official park alerts. Conditions change quickly; always check park alerts, weather and fire danger ratings before you go. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
